The Art of the Grimoire (MMXXVI)

A year long adventure in Book Making and the Botanical Arts

No books have been more feared, revered, or treasured than grimoires. Emerging in the 17th century, the witch’s grimoire was a living collection of herbal recipes, magical spells, and familial ceremonies—a book of power and memory.

In this intimate year-long workshop—part bookmaking, part botanical art, part ceremony—you will create a singular artist book that celebrates you. This grimoire will be your life-book: a physical record of your place in the universe, filled with recipes, rituals, memories, and family traditions.

Many of us have forgotten how to tend and preserve our own stories. This is where your book begins. Through guided exercises, journaling, and creative exploration, you will craft a book that is both deeply personal and visually cohesive. Every page will carry a sense of wonder, with Nature as our muse as we explore ancestral relationships with plants and magic.

Along the way, you will learn a variety of bookbinding methods and structures—ranging from whimsical and playful to historic traditions. We will fill our pages using techniques such as:

  • Eco-printing

  • Alternative Photography Methods

  • Plant pressing

  • Image transfers

  • Plant based inks and dyes

  • Book Plates and Book Cloth

  • Papermaking from Plants

  • End Papers:Suminagashi and Paste Papers

  • and much more

We will also discuss archival practices to ensure your work endures, so that your grimoire can be shared, remembered, and cherished for generations. This class meets monthly for 12 sessions, one Friday per month and begins Friday November 21st 2025

Some words from a current student:

“Stepping into the studio to create a grimoire with Tony(a) and our wonderful group has been a great pleasure. I signed up for the class with enthusiasm and anticipation…. But as is always the case with Tony’s classes it has been so much more than I expected. I have learned so many new skills, and created so many beautiful books, culminating in my final book… a family grimoire. I enjoy T’s attention to detail and respect for the historical practice of book making. I appreciate the depth of inner growth that I have experienced in all of T’s classes. I learned a lot about myself, and built/deepened friendships. I am so grateful for this joyful, creative class in these tumultuous times.” JMS Feb 2025
